Performance is the culmination of one’s self-presentation. It includes a wide variety of elements such as dress, hair, occupation, and personality. Performance can be taken to many different levels and changes situationally. In many cases an individual’s performance might be developed as a reaction to another one of the pillars such as fear, internal conflict, spirituality or status. Performance can be a very important tool of transformation in the way that if an individual acts the way they want to be portrayed, they may, through ritually acting a certain way, come to embody this characteristic wholly. There is also a great opportunity for deception in performance, spawned often times by internal conflict, such as when an individual acts in a certain way in reaction to a dislike of a characteristic that they possess.
