Sexuality

The figure depicted in this shrine is very alluring.  She seems to me to take on a Carmen-esque character.  The shape of the shrine speaks to universal and primal symbols of sexuality.  The exterior is the shape of a penis, and the interior cut-out in which the figure is placed is suggestive of a woman’s body.  The metal adornment in the headdress of the piece are nipples, and protruding through the holes on the earrings are wavy labia-like adornments.  These serve to further illustrate the female form.  The pattern painted on the shrine itself first appears to be purely decorative but upon closer investigation is an abstraction of a Kama Sutra position.
